The Community Bridges Racial, Equity & Inclusion Committee (REIC) is an education and action youth-led committee aiming to bring equity and inclusion to Montgomery County and Montgomery County Public Schools.
Girls from the REIC had the opportunity to march with Rob Bliss as he finished a 1,500+ mile walk through the Eastern United States for Black Lives Matter.
The committee meets bi-weekly for a general body meeting. Objectives include implementing the advocacy toolkit, political education, leadership skills and engaging with different CB programs within the framework of equity and inclusion. REIC provides CB girls the opportunity to lead, organize, and problem solve collectively.
Community Bridges (CB) is committed to advancing racial justice by highlighting youth/student voices in Montgomery County, Maryland. CB empowers youth voices by teaching girls how to become good advocates. Once girls feel comfortable advocating on behalf of themselves and their community, CB provides girls an outlet to express themselves and a platform for their voices to be heard.
The Community Bridges REIC is partnering with fellow nonprofit, GB Youth Media to record a podcast series on racial healing. The series will focus on teaching girls how to first create a podcast and also provide an outlet for CB girls to share their thoughts and personal experiences. Girls will use the podcast series to share their thoughts on inequities within the education system.
The youth-led committee held their first virtual Town Hall on July 15, 2020 with participation from local leaders to discuss the experiences of BIPOC students as they relate to the school to prison pipeline and its links to racial inequity in public education. The forum was centered around the learning experiences of Black, Indigenous, and young womxn of color in Montgomery County.
